The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater: Essays on Crafting
- Alanna Okun

Finished 1.27.25

First finished read of 2025! I saw some of my yarn crafty girlies reading this last yearish. I dont have any yarn friends irl, so, I'll pretend by reading this. Which it did hoit that mark for me. I don't know anything about the author and past its crafting essays. It felt like I was catching up with an old friend or going down memory lane with someone I havent caught up with years. I really enjoyed her illustrating the relationship crafting has with her, family, and friends. Some of the more personal drama/of that nature I didn't connect with being different demographics lmao. No as a dig towards her, but its kinda like skinny girls showing they have rolls when they sit down or whatever. Like I always have rolls we aren't the same lmao. After I started reading, I did do some research on her (quick google search). While I thought it was painfully millennial, she was an old Buzzfeed writer. So, not only being of the time (pub ~2018) you can tell how some of the essays go. Which isn't necessarily bad, but some was a lil cringe (with love). I do wish she went more into crafting somehow and relationship with her pieces/crafting/etc. Maybe I'm a different blend of mental illness and wish she talked a bit more of memorable pieces or her feelings throughout important projects for her. She did chat about a few, but I wish for more. I also wish she included some pictures of her knits or set ups really add icing to the millennial cake, but in a good way. The writing also felt like I was going through someones tumblr/blog which I did enjoy. I wish she went more into her sister's relationship with crafting more and had her write a chapter or two with how she feels about crafting. I feel it would be more powerful hearing(reading) it from the horses mouth y'know.

I do recommend! Its a fairly quick read less than 300 pages and bit sized chapters. Also, if you're like me and wish for more crafting IRL friends or someone to "chat" about crafting its nice. Yes, I know its easier than ever to connect with people over shared hobbies, but I hate instagram so fucking much.
